Everytime WOTC releases challenger decks, there comes a time shortly after, where the singles contained in these products, reach a low in their price. Just now, might be that time to pick up some of these singles for “cheap”. As from November, 4th, pioneer challenger decks 2022 have been made available to the public. Euhm, no, actually scratch that, in Europe, release date was moved to December, 9th as communicated through the official channels… I guess the release of these challenger decks have saturated the market at this time, so I’m expecting that for some of these staples, prices have hit their low and might rebound a bit in the near future.
Cardmarket data has been tracked for a time now, but sadly not long enough to have all historical price trend information for pioneer legal cards. Nevertheless, the information that is available, shows that it is about time to pick up those singles…
Data and charts in this post reference the available items and price trend as they were found on Cardmarket.
Let’s have a look at these decks and some noteworthy singles contained therein! A paragaph dedicated to the shock lands is saved to the last.
Dimir Control
The reason I wanted to highlight Dimir Control first is, because, data from selected singles show how the sales of these precon decks influence the amount of available items by quite a bit. Enough to have a considerable impact on the price trend. Other cards can be expected to show similar price dynamics. Hereafter, the available items and price trend for Shark Typhoon and Extinction Event respectively.
Near mid-december, we can see the amount of available items increase a huge amount. For Shark Typhoon, around 700 additional items entered the market, slashing off about 3 euro for each copy you would buy (saving you already 9 euros if you would finally want to build that Azorius Control deck that wants 3 of it).
About the same story holds for Extinction Event that saw an increase of about 1500 copies. As a detail, it’s nice to see how linear the increase of available items is w.r.t. the occurence of the respective cards in this preconstructed challenger deck, i.e. 1 copy of Shark Typhoon vs 2 copies of Extinction Event.
We can only expect other cards to follow similar supply increases and corresponding price drops.
Gruul Stompy
Following Gruul Stompy, I believe it might be the best moment to pick up some copies of “Questing Beast”, “Chandra, Torch of Defiance” or even “Rending Volley”.
Izzet Phoenix
Izzet phoenix is further reducing for “Expressive Iteration”, the uncommon from Strixhaven already got hit due to a ban in pioneer. Nevertheless, it keeps seeing play in all other formats the card is legal in.
Other noticeables pick-ups in my opinion are “Arclight Phoenix” and “Thing in the Ice”.
Orzovh Humans
I believe Orzovh Humans provides a buy opportunity for Mutavault.
Last but not least, Shock lands!
Now, for the shocker -couldn’t resist myself-, all these precons come with a copy of a specific shock land. Hence, these respective shocklands will come at a reduced price. We have, “Steam Vents”, “Watery Grave”, “Stomping Ground” and “Godless Shrine”. I guess, this might be the time to get a cheap playset.
That’s it…
…for this write-up. I hope this might be the time for you to pick some of these cards up, without necessarily having to have bought these at a much higher price a couple of weeks ago!
